Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Manager, the RN, Mental Health & Addictions provides essential health related advice and support to educators within schools by developing individual care plans for patients with mental health and addictions needs, in collaboration with mental health workers, if required.

What will you do?

  • Provides medical consultation to educators regarding issues such as medication management for individual students, particularly those with complex medical conditions concurrent with mental illness or addictions
  • Advises educators on potential side-effects of different classes of medications
  • Provides support and/or intervention in complex issues such as refusal to attend treatment, self-harm, suicide, or violent behaviour
  • Supports educators to meet the complex medical and mental health needs of students who require extra supports for health and/or safety concerns of self and/or others
  • Provides the support of a health professional in helping students and/or parent(s) to access services such as primary health care or a children’s mental health centre and provide education about options for treatment
  • Provides essential health related advice and support to the Mental Health leaders in developing comprehensive board plans to address a collaborative response to the mental health needs of students
  • Acts as a spokesperson as required, and interpret the role of HCCSS to patients, health care professionals and to the public. Ensure positive public relations and effective co-ordination of services through ongoing liaison and participation on internal and external committees
  • Participates in establishing, maintaining, and monitoring standards for the Care Coordinators. This includes committee work and active participation and contribution to quality initiatives
  • Assesses for and promotes a safe environment for patients, caregivers, family members, and staff. Adhere to health and safety policies/ practices developed and implemented by HCCSS
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff, educators and students within district school boards
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned with service providers and other community partners

What must you have?

  • University degree preferred in Nursing and/or equivalent
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system
  • Recent clinical experience (preferably within the last two (2) years) in providing mental health and/or addictions services
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system and recent (preferably within the last (2) years) clinical experience in providing mental health and/or addictions services for children and youth considered an asset
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ recent (preferably within the last two (2) years) experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Solid knowledge of health care related legislation and practices
  • Proficiency with computerized information systems

 

Hours of work:

All hours of operation (Initially Monday-Friday 0830-1630) subject to change as per the Collective Agreement (35 hours per week; 70 hours per bi-weekly pay period).

Position location and travel:

Hybrid work model, subject to change. 

 

Regular travel within the geographical region of Ontario Health atHome Central East may be required. A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle are necessary.
