As a Mental Health and Addictions Registered Nurse, you will provide medical consultation to educators regarding issues such as medication management, advising educators on the potential side effects of different classes of medication, and providing support and/or intervention in complex issues such as refusal to attend treatment, complex medical conditions concurrent with mental illness or addictions, self-harm, suicide, or violent behavior.

What will you do?

  • Your role will support educators to meet the complex medical and mental health needs of students who require extra supports for health and/or safety concerns of self and/or others.
  • You will liaise with children’s mental health agencies, primary care practitioners and act as a spokesperson to interpret the role of Home and Community Care Support Services South East to clients.
  • Provide the support of a health professional in helping students and/or parent(s) to access services such as primary health care or a children’s mental health centre and provide education about options for treatment.
  • Provide essential health related advice and support to the Mental Health leaders in developing comprehensive board plans to address a collaborative response to the mental health needs of students.
  • Ensure positive public relations and effective co-ordination of services through ongoing liaison and participation on internal and external committees.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff, educators and students within district school boards.
  • Assesses for and promotes a safe environment for clients, caregivers, family members, and staff.
  • Participate in establishing, maintaining, and monitoring standards for the Case Management. This includes committee work and active participation and contribution to quality initiatives.

 

What must you have?

  • Registered Nurse (BScN or diploma)
  • Case Management experience is an asset
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience as a Registered Nurse (BScN or diploma)
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system for children and youth
  • Direct clinical experience in providing mental health and/or addictions services for children and youth
  • Solid knowledge of health care related legislation and practices
  • Hold current CPR- Level C & AED certification
  • Knowledge of the health care delivery system and community resources
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Effective time management, prioritization and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and co-operatively in a busy multidisciplinary environment
  • Established ability to accurately complete required documentation, reports and forms
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Proficient in a Windows environment
  • Advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills
  • Must be able to practice independently and interdependently
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Effective organizational and planning skills
  • Basic proficiency with computerized information systems
  • Effectively maintain a constant flow of verbal and written communication with others throughout the workplace as well as outside the organization.
  • Able to communicate with clients’, their families, and other relevant individuals in order to follow through with care plan directives.
  • Demonstrated awareness of cultural diversity, as well as ability to behave discreetly and sensitively to confidential issues.
